英語 tyranny （暴政、圧政）の強勢は第1音節にあり ティラニ と読みますが、「暴君」の意味の tyrant は タイラント と読みます。

強勢は同じく第1音節です。

形容詞 tyrannical （暴政の、暴君の）の強勢は第2音節です。

発音は ティラニカル でも タイラニカル でもよいです。

はじめに pandemic パンデミック 語源

このブログでは、筆者が気になる言葉、語源が理解できれば記憶しやすいような単語、関連する古典語の文法などを説明していきます。

最近よく耳にする英語 パンデミック (pandemic / 感染症の世界的流行）の語源： 

ギリシア語 παν- (pan, パン, 全ての) + δῆμος (dēmos, デーモス,  民)  より。

pan は汎神論(pantheism: παν + θεός 神)の「汎」、
demos は デモクラシー democracy (δῆμος + κρατία 権力/支配）の demo- と同源。
